Apothecary businesses of old were typically family-run, and wives or other women of the family worked alongside their husbands in the shops, learning the trade themselves. Women were still not allowed to train and be educated in universities so this allowed them a chance to be trained in medical knowledge and healing. Previously, women had some influence in other women’s healthcare, such as serving as midwives and other feminine care in a setting that was not considered appropriate for males.
Inspired by the private libraries, smoking lounges and exclusive gentleman’s clubs of yesteryear, which as a general rule tended towards excluding women from the pursuit of knowledge and discourse (excepting of course on the topics of the smooth running of her household), this female owned and operated business invites you to peer between the volumes and venture into her not so secret Apothecary. As a spiteful nod to the outdated sentiment that it was unbecoming for a woman to educate herself, each of our unique blends is named after a work of classic literature that embodies the overall vibe of the blend and is accompanied by a complimentary quote from it’s classic namesake’s pages.
